You’ll recall that many months ago I wrote that I believed Microsoft was vehemently supporting the underdog HD DVD format in an attempt to confuse the public and cause sufficient consumer hesitation to allow it to develop and deploy its own download service. Now comes word that its the X-Box 360 video game console will be able to download high definition movies for temporary storage on its hard drive. The service is expected to be launched on November 22nd. Rumored titles include Mission Impossible 3 and Superman Returns; they will be rentals, but costs are not yet available. Expect a high definition film download to take several hours.
It’ll be interesting to see how much space each film take up on the X-Box hard drive, what the quality is like, what the costs are, and which studios will support the scheme. I’ve detected your expressions of some real resentment of Microsoft and some resistance to support any Microsoft product. Most of us may use Windows and Office (the company’s two dominant profit centers), but do you know anyone who is completely satisfied with the products?
