  A good example is material that is anamorphically enhanced. As Malooly elaborates, "anamorphic doesn't really affect quality (in terms of compression), except you often have more picture area to compress." With The Beyond, if the 2.35:1 image was letterboxed in a 4:3 (full frame) viewing area, it would have black bars at the top and bottom, areas which the MPEG codec can compress more easily. "The encoder uses bilateral and predictive frames for the black areas, which is very easy for it to do." But since The Beyond has been anamorphically encoded, the full 1.85:1 image area is horizontally squeezed to fit in a 4:3 frame. Thus, there are no black areas, so all the redundant data that could be easily discarded now has to be used to encode this increased picture information.
