MOSCOW, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Russian Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov said on Wednesday there were no signs of life on a stricken submarine grounded in the Arctic Barents Sea, but that this did not necessarily mean that the 116 sailors were dead.
His comments were quoted by the Interfax news agency.
The agency also quoted President Vladimir Putin describing the situation as "difficult, and I would say, critical".
"Everything that can possibly be done is being done for the rescue of the crew and the submarine," said Putin, who is on holiday in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
The Kursk's crew turned off the reactor and let the submarine drift to the bottom of the sea over the weekend after a crash or explosion. After two failed attempts to save the crew, rescuers launched a third attempt on Wednesday, but the navy said it was being hampered by bad weather.
