Fiat has confirmed it is in talks with General Motors, with hopes of taking control of the Detroit automaker's Opel unit.
The company intends to create a single car company that would include Chrysler, which Fiat is still in the process of acquiring.
It is believed that the new company, if created, would have US$105 billion in annual revenues.
In a statement released Sunday, Fiat said it is evaluating the possibility of creating a new company, with its own auto business at the core.
Fiat Group Automobiles includes the Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari brands.
Media reports earlier in the weekend had suggested that Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne was engaged in talks with General Motors, but those talks were not confirmed until Sunday.
Opel is GM's biggest brand in Europe.
