RUSSIA A fire-safety system malfunctioned aboard a new Russian nuclear submarine on Saturday, killing 20 people and injuring 21 others. The victims suffocated after the fire-extinguishing system accidentally released Freon gas. The vessel, an Akula II class attack submarine, was on a test run in the Sea of Japan. There were about 200 people on board. The submarine returned to its base under its own power. It was Russia's worst naval accident since torpedo explosions sank another nuclear-powered submarine, the Kursk, in the Barents Sea in 2000, killing 118 seamen aboard. |
