`The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD offers image quality that exceeds the previously issued non-anamorphic DVD, though viewed today is not reference quality. The picture is very solid, with fine film grain apparent, but not in excess as it appeared on the previous DVD. Images are nicely detailed, with excellent shadow delineation as rendered in the jungle scenes. Some scenes appear a bit muddy and smeared. Colors are fully saturated exhibiting good balance, but deep blacks often lack definition. A bit of pixelization and edge enhancement is noticed throughout.

`Sound Quality: 3 (5 is the highest rating)
`Although Platoon was awarded a Best Sound Oscar(r), this Dolby(r) Digital 5.1-channel discrete soundtrack is a disappointment, with underwhelming utilization of dimension. This is clearly a screen channel-oriented soundtrack, with slightly dated fidelity. Dialogue is presented at a reasonably comfortable listening level and is somewhat spatially integrated. Deep bass is also wanting, and not much has been done with 5.1 audio re-purposing in this respect.
