This "D-4" cable you are referring to is in fact just an analog component cable in a different simpler single cable configuration.

It isnt digital, where as DVI-I and DVI-D are digital.

DVI-D is on the other hand interchangeable with HDMI.

So, component and D4 are both analog and DVI-I/DVI-D and HDMI are both digital.

The reason why D4 exists in japan is because people here are too retarded to understand what to do with 3 component cables and manyfacturers though a single cable would be easyer to unerstand.
Also the cable has 4 or 5 number types. D1-D5.

Each number represents a differnt level of resolution.

D1=525i, D2=525p, D3=720p, D4=1080i, and lastly D5=1080p (which is recent and a total waste of time since HDMI is the new standard)
Only one TV in japan has a D5 conection, Sonys Bravia 40" and 46" LCDs.

Its a useles conection due to the fact that no product that outputs 1080p through an analog D5 terminal exists.

Sony again, with their own unique useless formats.

Back on topic. If an HD DVD drive is coming out for the Xbox, then an HDMI cable will be necesary otherwise HD DVD wont work. ALL hd content on either HD DVD or Blu Ray will be HDCP encrypted meaning a cable that supports HDCP like HDMI will be necesary .

Eventually something has to happen, and it will mean either a software upgrade and a new HDMI cable, or another video output on the HD DVD drive itself.
