Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?

Now, here is one soundtrack that just rocks with low end. I suppose by this point everyone has seen Jurassic Park at least once, and most likely in a theater. If you saw it in a well-equipped cinema, you no doubt were treated to quite the sonic experience. I'm sure many a DVD enthusiast is hoping for the DVD soundtrack experience to end all DVD soundtrack experiences with Jurassic Park, and I was satisfied with this Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack.

The Academy Award-winning sound effects are preserved with great power on this track. Surrounds are used aggressively, and the dynamic range is terrific. Thankfully, dialogue is still very intelligible and not overpowered by the music or effects, even in some of the louder sequences. While I've always wished I had a better subwoofer (especially after hearing this disc!), Jurassic Park gave it quite a workout. It's power is noticeable right from the opening credits, with the bass drum sounds immediately sharp, distinct and tight. However, the Dolby Digital and DTS laserdisc soundtracks were reference quality, and I did notice a tad bit of flatness on this DVD. Occasionally, imaging from the front to the surrounds sounded just a tad obvious, and pans from the left to the right seemed a bit too easy to localize. And unfortunately, though lessened from the laserdisc, there still is a bit of harshness to the high end, a problem which plagued the original theatrical showings as well. But overall, a very exciting Dolby Digital soundtrack, and just the sheer diversity and sonic gymnastics it performs makes it a joy to listen to. A very powerful low end experience, and up there with the better Dolby Digital soundtracks I've heard on DVD.

In addition, separate DTS widescreen editions of Jurassic Park and The Lost World will also be released concurrent with the Dolby Digital release. While there's no argument that the Dolby Digital version of JURASSIC PARK is superb but I was pleased to find that the DTS release of the film on DVD is even better. With a fuller, more lush sound, improved imaging, tighter bass and more articulated fine detail, the DTS edition of JURASSIC PARK edges out the Dolby Digital in a head to head comparison. A good example is Chapter 7, which reveals the improvements in imaging early on as the cow is hoisted aslunch for the raptors. Listening to the DTS version, the cow's movement was very precise between speakers. The same scene with the Dolby contained sound not totally committed to either the front or rear right channels and instead sort of "ping-ponging" between them.

Another scene for easy comparison was chapter 16, with John Williams' score being much more three-dimensional in the DTS rendering. As the lights come on one by one, the music swells filling the room and enveloping the listener with sound that seems to be coming from everywhere, yet no where specific. When compared with the DTS, the Dolby handling of the same section sounded more front heavy with sound pushed further outside of the listening area. The DTS 5.1 soundtrack, encoded at 754kbps, is the victor in the head to head comparison here.

A French 2.0 surround track (which is predictably far more subdued in dynamic range and surround use) and English Captions and Spanish subtitles are also provided on the Dolby Digital release. The DTS edition features a Dolby Digital English 2.0 surround track, and English Captions and French and Spanish subtitles.
