' The First Universal Chipset Announced
'
' In earlier columns, I suggested that HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc universal players would make the format war moot, and later I described an announcement by Samsung that it will market such a player if the format war was not resolved. Now comes word on January 3rd from chipmaker Broadcom that it is unveiling the BCM7411D, the first universal chipset for high-definition DVD.
'
' The chip is claimed to support both the H.264 CODEC and the VC-1 CODEC that are used by Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. Broadcom also published an application paper that represents a design reference that utilizes the BCM7411D and a companion chip for a universal high-definition DVD player. A company spokesman was quoted as saying, “Our chip set will play 100% of HD-DVD and 100% of Blu-Ray, and all the special features that come with that.” That implies that the chipset’s firmware will support both iHD and BD-J interactive layers, and AACS with and without the added layers of protection found on Blu-ray Disc. This chipset has application in both dedicated players, like those found in the home theater environment, and in high-definition DVD ROM drives targeted for computers.
