The Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?
There are two 5.1 tracks, Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES. I sampled both, but watched with DTS selected. This is a terrific track that’s a little deceptive. The surrounds come alive during crowd scenes and particularly during the last climactic hour or so. The viewer is then immersed in a sea of sounds (no pun intended) that heighten the drama. In the quieter emotional scenes dedicated to growing relationships, the sound tends to become more focused toward the front of the theater; it’s almost as if the sound designer wanted to avoid any distractions that would diminish our attention to the more human aspects of the characters’ arcs. Deep visceral bass will require a substantial subwoofer to fully appreciate. James Horner’s sweeping and moving orchestral score is presented across a broad soundstage enhanced with leakage into the surround channels; the fidelity is very pleasing. Dialog remains remarkably clear throughout, even as the sonic complexity overflows with dramatic orchestrations and dynamic sound effects. Gloria Stuart’s voiceover as the elderly Rose Dawson Calvert has a very in-the-room like presence. The dynamic range is quite impressive and, as I found on the recent release of Star Wars Episode III, dialog tends to run a little low to allow for greater headroom for the sound effects, perhaps by as much as 6 dB. But be careful about kicking up your gain unless you’re sure that your loudspeakers can support the additional power during the loud sequences. Finally, you’ll not be surprised to learn that when I sampled the Dolby Digital and DTS tracks, I found the DTS track to have that expected subtle improvement in timbre; I believe the bass was a tad tighter as well.
The alternate languages are in French and Spanish, and there is an optional English track in Dolby Surround 2.0. Optional subtitles are in English, for which Closed Captions are also included.
