Canada's oldest microwave found in Etobicoke

Tuesday, 11 October 2005

After a coast-to-coast search, sponsors of a recent consumer contest say they have found the oldest microwave in Canada. The 41 year old Signature Electronic microwave oven was purchased in 1965 by Isabelle Cadel of Etobicoke and remains in in working order.

While her microwave may not cook as well as it did when Lester B. Pearson was Prime Minister, Mrs. Cadel is an avid chef who still uses her microwave every day. To win the contest sponsored by Panasonic Canada, entrants submitted a write-up and picture of their old microwaves in an attempt to have theirs proclaimed "Canada's oldest."

"Despite inexperience, I willingly experimented with one of the first microwaves in Toronto," said Mrs. Cadel of her winning Signature Electronic Oven. "Incidentally, I rarely use my 1952 oven anymore, as I have grown to love the convenience, quality and flexibility of microwave cooking. In fact, I use it for everything - primary cooking as well as reheating and defrosting."

Panasonic said that it received entries from across Canada with 23 per cent of entrants boasting their microwave was a relic from the '70s and 64 per cent holding on to a microwave purchased in the '80s. The results were not surprising considering a recent survey conducted by Decima Research found that while 95 per cent of us own a microwave, one in five is at least a decade or older.

In case your wondering the the first commercial microwave oven hit the market in 1947. This primitive unit was gigantic and expensive, standing 5 1/2 feet tall, weighing over 750 pounds, and costing about $5000 each. The magnetron tube had to be water-cooled, so a plumbing installation was also required. (read more at http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/history.html)

The first home models were released in the 1950's by Tappan although it wasn't until the 1960's when countertop models that we would recognize today, first made it to homes.
