Features And Benefits

For years, audiophiles have dreamt of a car audio system that could rival the dimension of a live performance. A system with such astonishing depth, imaging and transparency--it could transform the car into a concert hall. Now, thanks to the new Sherwood Digital Car Audio System, that dream is about to become a reality. Regarding 5.1 audio, Ken Pohlmann of Car Stereo Review said "...multi-channel playback is the most important advance in mobile audio since the introduction of stereo." Experience for yourself the full dimension of multi-channel sound with the Sherwood Digital Car Audio System. It's going to revolutionize the way you listen to car audio.

The XDTS-80 DIGITAL Processor Using the same processing power as sherwood's benchmark Sherwood Newcastle R-945 receiver, the XDTS-80 turns DTS encoded CDs (or DVDs) into 5.1 channel magic. Engage the digital Circle Surround algorithm to turn any surround encoded material (such as Dolby® Pro Logic) into a 5-channel experience that will rival any discrete format. Or use Circle Surround to transform any stereo source, even FM, into multi-layered sound with the warmth, roundness and timbre of a live performance.

The XCM-7370 Head Unit With its digital output, the XCM-7370 is the perfect complement to our processor. This CD Receiver/Changer Controller has a fully detachable fold-down face, multi-color LCD display, 30 x 4 power, and 4-gang FM tuner. CD playback is first-rate. And FM sensitivity and noise reduction have both been carefully chosen to optimize listening quality.

The AX-6275 Power Amplifier The industry's first amp designed specifically for 5.1 channel playback, the AX-6275 was engineered for high performance and installation ease. With 35 Watts per channel x 5 (50 x 5 @ 2 ohms) for the front and surround channels and 100 Watts (130 @ 2 ohms) for the subwoofer, it's the only high performance amp you'll ever need. And with all the inputs, outputs and controls on a single side, hooking up is simple.

CircleSurround presents 5.1 discrete channels of surround sound from a two channel delivery system.

Benefits

* Backward compatibility provides listeners with 5.1 channels of surround performance from entire collection of music and film, including broadcast, videotape and stereo recorded music

* Full bandwidth audio is presented to surround channels, which allows nearly 300% more information to come from rear speakers

* Patented steering technique can present different signals to surround channels simultaneously -- even when the surround input is mono

* Separate Music and Film modes for optimum performance depending on application

* Sophisticated steering logic retains spacious stereo presentation even in the presence of strong center channel information

* Automotive application in 4.1 with center phantom channel

About the Technology
Circle Surround is backward compatible, such that surround sound playback is possible from any stereo or passive matrix-encoded material. Five full-bandwith, discrete channels of information can be extracted from an enormous library of material not encoded in Dolby Digital or DTS. These sources include many of today's DVDs and laser discs, as well as most all videotape, VCD, Compact Disc, radio and television broadcast material.

The encode/decode scheme is capable of presenting full bandwidth information to the fronts and surrounds, and does not require any compression of the signal. As a result, playback of music and movies is at a level of realism and quality unavailable from any other surround sound format.

Circle Surround is a multi-channel encoding and decoding technology designed to encode five discrete channels into two channels (the same space required for stereo) and decode the two channels back into five for playback over a hi-fi or home theater system equipped for multi-channel playback. In addition to the five channels for surround sound playback, there is also a low frequency output for the operation of a subwoofer.

How the Technology Works
A Circle Surround decoder looks at a passive matrix (Lt/Rt) or stereo signal and extracts the surround channels by subtracting L-R. The surround information is then divided into three bands at 480 and 2kHz with a very steep slope filter to ensure good separation between and proper phase at the crossover points. The mid and high band surround information is then steered to the proper rear speaker depending upon the front channel signal dominance. In the "theater" mode, a 30ms delay is applied to help account for the "precedence effect".

Adding L+R provides the decoder with the center channel information. Circle Surround is unique in that its center channel processing operates in one of two modes. When a strong center channel signal is present, the gain is set to present center information at the proper level for precise localization. If a strong center signal is not detected, the center channel level is reduced by as much as 10dB to avoid collapsing the standard stereo imaging from the front left and right speakers.

DIGITAL SURROUND

THE FINEST 5.1 SURROUND SOUND TECHNOLOGY ON THE MARKET TODAY!
An amazing new technology for surround-sound entertainment, DTS Digital Surround is an encode/decode system that delivers six channels (5.1) of master-quality, 20-bit audio. In the encoding process, the DTS algorithm encrypts six channels of 20-bit digital audio information in the space previously allotted for only two channels of 16-bit linear PCM. Then during playback, the DTS decoder reconstructs the original six channels of 20-bit digital audio. Each of these six channels is audibly superior to the 16-bit linear PCM audio found on conventional compact discs.

BETTER AUDIO QUALITY FOR BOTH MOVIES AND MUSIC.
The DTS "master-quality" mode, for laserdiscs, compact discs, and DVDs, use less than one-fourth the data reduction of Dolby Digital (AC-3), resulting in audibly superior performance. The DTS commitment is to deliver an uncompromised reproduction of the original multi-track masters. For laserdiscs, however, this approach allocates all of the available digital-audio data space to the new six channels of audio, while Dolby Digital uses high data-reduction to fit their digital data onto an analog stereo track, leaving the stereo PCM tracks intact.

5.1 CHANNELS OF ELECTRONICS AND SPEAKERS, WITH A DTS DECODER.
A "discrete" 5.1 audio system is required to experience this state-of-the-art technology. That means a system with six separate channels of electronics and speakers; for left, center, right, left surround, right surround and subwoofer (the ".1" channel). The electronics can consist of any 5.1 surround processor with a built-in DTS decoding circuit or add-on DTS decoder, plus six channels of amplification (or five channels plus a powered subwoofer). Since the introduction of an advanced Motorola chip that can be easily integrated into any multi-channel product, all new models (including all-in-one receivers) can now offer both DTS and Dolby Digital.

A popular analogy draws comparisons to AM and FM radio transmissions. You cannot receive AM signals on a FM radio and vice-versa. However, for maximum choices in entertainment, your radio can be equipped with both technologies, so that you can select one or the other at the flip of a switch. And while there have always been practical uses for the low-fidelity broadcasts on AM radio, the success of FM-stereo is a strong example of the demand for higher-quality sound.

MULTI-CHANNEL MUSIC MIXES WITH MASTER-QUALITY SOUND.
Digital Theater Systems (DTS) is already recognized around the world for providing the finest surround sound digital audio tracks ever developed for motion pictures. Now DTS brings Digital Surround technology to music recordings, creating the opportunity to experience a truly state-of-the-art multi-channel mix of any multi-channel master. The result is a new level of sonic realism that dramatically transcends all previous stereo versions, changing forever the way we can experience recorded music.

A DISCRETE 5.1 PLAYBACK SYSTEM WITH A "DIGITAL OUT’ CD PLAYER.
DTS-encoded compact discs play on any 5.1 discrete surround system that utilizes a DTS decoder and a compact disc player (or laserdisc combi-player) with a digital output. And all DTS-encoded movies and music recordings are mixed and mastered compatibly with the 5.1 speaker configurations that are designed for home theater audio systems. However, it is already anticipated that each title will vary in terms of how each artist/engineer/producer chooses to mix their multi-channel master, and what musical information is allocated into each of the five full-range channels and the L.F.E.(.1) sub-woofer track. For optimum playback of all future recordings, it is highly recommended that full-range, equally-matched loudspeakers are utilized for all five of the main channels (including the "surrounds").

You can hear the saxophonist from behind. The pianist appears just left of your front bumper--the lead vocalist in your front seat. No, it isn't your brain playing tricks on you--it's the extraordinary audio processor technology from Circle Surround®. And here's how it works: The decoder simply extracts out-of-phase (left/right) information from a stereo signal, separates it into three distinct bands and then steers it to the appropriate rear speakers depending on front channel signal dominance. Then, the center channel is filled in by adding left/right information. All of which means you'll enjoy sound that actually feels like you are in the middle of a live performance. But be warned: you may just find a few musicians sitting in your back seat.
