Paramount Home Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment have announced that in October - roughly six years and two months after the initial marketing of the film on DVD - the long awaited special edition of Titanic will be released. The hugely successful and successfully huge movie will be given not one but two editions: a 2-disc special edition and 4-disc collector's edition, each filled with new bonus materials. I'm sure I don't have to dwell on the film's remarkable box office success, earning more than $1.8 billion worldwide. The demand for this film resulted in its DVD becoming a best seller, and those strong sales are reported to have delayed these special treatments. The two-disc special edition will include a branching feature that will make a selection of never-before-seen footage available for viewing. The four-disc collector's edition will contain numerous deleted scenes, new in-depth documentaries, and much more. Most important, the film finally will be available in anamorphic video derived from a new high definition master, and will be presented in Dolby Digital 6.1 audio. The four-disc set will split the film across two discs - similar to the four disc sets for the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy - reportedly to offer the highest possible video quality. This release marks the official start of the soul-searching dilemma that will occupy our minds and challenge our wallets during the transition from standard definition (SD) DVD to high definition (HD) DVD. I know how annoying you find the whole double-dip phenomenon. A studio will release the theatrical version of a film on DVD. A few months later, another edition is announced, perhaps with an extended version of the film or with a cornucopia of extras. Sometimes the studio will try to make up for it by providing a $5 rebate - if you can prove that you bought both - but you still have to spend more than you should have. The original Titanic DVD was distributed by Paramount and that studio has declared its support of HD-DVD. Regardless, there are reports that despite Titanic being given a new high definition transfer, we cannot expect an HD-DVD version anytime soon. So apparently, we are expected to purchase one of the new SD anamorphic releases and buy the HD version at some future date. I can see how having to buy the HD version of a film that was released substantially before HD-DVD or Blu-ray Disc were introduced is unavoidable. But this writer believes that any new SD DVD that has been mastered in high definition and released from this fall forward should enjoy a simultaneous release on a high definition DVD format. Film enthusiasts should not be forced to buy one version after another. It may be profitable for the studios, but it simply generates bad will. Worse yet, owners of one of the new SD versions might be reluctant to invest in the delayed HD version, a trend that could have a negative impact on the market success of HD DVD formats. |
