Universal Media Discs, also known as UMDs, are the latest optical storage disc designed for the high speed and efficient delivery of digital content. Developed by Sony Entertainment, and initially only for use on the Sony PSP, UMDs offer a broad range of digital content such as music videos, movies, and sports programs.
Each 6 centimeter, high capacity Universal Media Disc can store up to 1.8GB of content, which translates to two hours of DVD quality video or four hours of standard quality content.
All movies will be released in widescreen aspect ratios compatible to the 16:9 widescreen on the PSP player. Add to that the power of the PSP, and you have your own portable entertainment system in the palm of your hands.
UMDs are single sided, dual layer discs designed initially for use with only Sony's PSP, or Playstation Portable. But UMDs are compatible with other media platforms and will no doubt become the format of choice for portable entertainment in the very near future.
