The second problem is tougher to deal with. Some source devices have a bug in their HDMI output circuit which cause them to lose critical black information if that output is connected to a DVI input on the display. The bug only exists is you go from HDMI to DVI. That is, HDMI to HDMI, DVI to DVI, or DVI to HDMI will not exhibit this bug.

The bug arises because there is a particularly popular chip which is commonly used to drive HDMI outputs. When that chip discovers it is connected to a DVI display it needs to make sure that the signal is appropriately constructed for a DVI device. The chip can do that conversion automatically or the source device may have fed the right signal to the chip already -- i.e., no conversion is needed. The bug is that the chip discards "blacker than black" data when it is asked to do the conversion.

The is the "HDMI to DVI black crush bug".

If you have a device with this bug, you can not fix the problem yourself. It is possible that a firmware upgrade from the manufacturer can fix the bug (by insuring the chip doesn't need to do the conversion -- i.e., pass it the right signal to begin with). Devices that don't use this chip, or that already pass it the right signal to begin with, don't have this bug.

As I understand it the Samsung players have this bug and there is no firmware fix yet. The Denon 3910 has this bug and there is supposed to be a firmware fix in the works but I don't know if it has been confirmed to actually fix the problem yet. However the Denon 3910 also has a DVI output that can be used instead without problems. The Onkyo SP-1000 has this bug and there is a firmware fix out there which HAS been confirmed to fix the problem. The Pioneer 59avi and the HDDirecTivo combo set top box (HR10-250) do *NOT* have this bug. I'm not sure whether the Sony has this bug but the detailed thread here for that player undoubtedly will have the answer.
