на всех выставках, газетах, журналах и по телевидению, вот, например, выдержка:
At a three-day "HD DVD Showcase" in Tokyo last month, Toshiba and NEC officials confirmed that HD DVD-format players would be on the market in the U.S. and Japan in 2005, at least as soon as Blu-ray players if not sooner.

правда, есть небольшой нюанс:
While the titles are not exactly Hollywood blockbusters--a Japanese drama called Moonlight Jellyfish and a series of travelogues shot in HD--Pony Canyon is the largest video program supplier in Japan, and the commitment is a coup of sorts for the format.

Правда, Блю-Рейщики говорили об еще ранних сроках, но почему то:

Although the Blu-ray meeting offered little in the way of new technical information about the format, attendees said, the format's supporters appeared to have backed off from their most aggressive timetable for launch.

"You don't hear the words '2005' anymore. They now talk about 2006," one source said.

но это все не главное, вот почитай на досуге:

HI-DEF FORMATS: US OR THE OTHER GUY
UPDATE: Studios hesitant to commit
By Jennifer Netherby and Paul Sweeting 6/8/2004

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JUNE 8 | Backers of the rival high-definition DVD formats are pushing studios to pick a side so the technology can reach market by late 2005, but DVD presidents say there's no rush.

Noting international DVD penetration rates still lagging behind the U.S., top execs are hesitant to commit to any one format while pleading against the possibility of a format war.

"We're comfortably on the fence," MGM Home Entertainment chief operating officer David Bishop quipped during a Lucky Seven conference last week. The home video event, held at the Wyndham Bel Age Hotel in Los Angeles, was sponsored by Video Store magazine.

DVD presidents were mostly in agreement that high-def doesn't need to hit market until late 2006 or early 2007.

"Timing is not crucial; we haven't finished with this format," Warner Home Video chief Jim Cardwell said.

The presidents spoke on a conference panel following a heated presentation by former Warner Home Video president Warren Lieberfarb.

Lieberfarb accused Sony and other backers of the so-called Blu-ray Disc format of trying to bluff the movie industry into embracing their proposed high-definition video system at the expense of DVD.

Dubbing Blu-ray "vaporware," he claimed the format would shackle studios with high-costs and less flexibility than a competing high-def format based on the current DVD standard.

"I challenge you to prove to all of us here that Blu-ray is a real format," Lieberfarb said, addressing Sony representatives.

Sony reps replied that the Blu-ray format would be ready to go by the end of next year and that costs would quickly fall in line with DVD.

The exchange was one of the sharpest to date in what has become a nasty fight between rival high-def camps.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment president Bob Chapek moved during his luncheon keynote to position himself as a broker between the two, which he dubbed two state-of-the-art trains speeding down the tracks at each other "in a high-stakes game of chicken."

He cautioned that if two formats go to market, the industry could confuse consumers and in the worst case, end up following the niche path of laserdisc, which never crossed over to the mainstream.

"I for one will wave the flag hoping to find a common solution for the consumer's benefit and that of our industry," Chapek promised.

"One format is the only way to be successful," 20th Century Fox head Mike Dunn agreed during the presidents' panel.

The Blu-ray Disc format, backed by Sony, Phillips and Matsushita, uses a high-density disc to pack the maximum amount of high-def content onto a single disc, but it's incompatible with current the DVD format. HD DVD, a competing format backed by the DVD Forum, uses high-level compression to squeeze more information onto a standard DVD.

Both sides are rushing to reach market first and are ardently wooing the studios for support.

Timing seems to be the one area of agreement between the two high-def camps. "There are 25 million high-definition displays now. They're waiting for our movies," said Ben Feingold. "They'll get used to watching those movies on HBO--HBO high-def or Showtime high-def. It might be a lost opportunity for us."

Their agreement ends there.

In an interview, Lieberfarb accused Sony and Phillips of trying to undermine DVD in favor of their own technology.

"This is Sony and Phillips trying to regain the hegemony they had with the patents on CD, a position they lost with DVD," he said. "They've done everything they can to try to undermine the mission of the DVD Forum, which was to create open standards, in order to promote their own closed standards."

Lieberfarb claimed Sony is trying to create a sense of inevitability around Blu-ray before the format is really ready for prime time.

In his presentation, Lieberfarb challenged Sony to prove that it could actually manufacture Blu-ray discs in the sort of volume needed by the studios to support a robust home video business.

Feingold dismissed the criticism as "unfounded."

"There's no basis for saying the discs don't exist because anyone can go to Japan and see us making them," Feingold said. "We've made over a million discs in Japan."

He called the DVD Forum's proposal to extend the current DVD standard into high-def an "interim" step when what's needed is a "leap."

"Warren's view of what's needed in terms of capacity by the creative community is the view of a moment in time," Feingold said of Lieberfarb, his one-time ally in the launch of the current DVD format. "We're trying to create a format for the future."

СЛЕДУЮЩИЕ ДВА ГОДА ВЫ НЕ УВИДИТЕ НИЧЕГО (кроме пары японских фильмов) НА HD-DVD
