Anyone with a 5.1 digital amplifier or a DVD player with a built-in Dolby Digital decoder can, as of August 22, enjoy EX/ES 6.1 surround sound (which introduces an extra channel of audio information to rear centre) for just Ј400, the cost of Smart Device's CS-3X Jr. This clever little device, exclusively imported to the UK by DVD Warehouse, works with a 5.1 digital amplifier by taking the left & right pre-outs and decoding them into three channels, with the decoded data then being fed into two separate power amplifiers, or into a three-channel power amplifier, which will then feed the left & right rear speakers and centre rear speaker(s). With DVD players like Pioneer's 626 which have built-in Dolby Digital decoders, the need for a separate power amplifier to feed the left & right rears is removed.

As well as being available from the DVD Warehouse site, you should be able to get hold of a CS-3X Jr from your local HiFi/Home Cinema specialist, who should be able to give you advice on how to plug the add-on decoder into your existing system.

Home Cinema Choice has a CS-3X Jr in its laboratories as we speak, so look out for a full test soon.
