The wait is nearly over folks: by October this year Denon will have unleashed the (probably just under £1,000) DVD-3300, an all-singing, all-dancing DVD-Audio player designed to take full advantage of all the sonic finery the DVD-Audio is going to present us with. There's an Audio Only mode which turns off the video circuitry during DVD-Audio playback so that there's no potential for electronic interference, 24-bit, 192kHz high resolution audio D/A converters (able to produce a dynamic range theoretically nearly 50dB greater than CD), MLP (Lossless packing) decoding to recreate the origntal high resolution of the recording, and as ever with Denon gear, the DVD-3300 contains only the very finest-grade components. The most key feature of the player for home cinema fans is the inclusion of a built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoder. Now all we need are a few DVD-Audio discs to play on it...
Denon's other important upcoming DVD release is the DVD-F100, a seriously sexy-looking little number designed to sit with the matching AVR-F100 (which carries Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and FM tuner and stereo amplification) and POA-F100 3-channel power amp. The three components will also be available separately from mid-September, though most of our readers would probably want the full set, which would set you back between £800 and £900.
Complete home cinema solutions are all the rage these days, and Denon has got one of its own - though true to form, it's a few notches above most such systems, consisting of the DVD-F100-based system mentioned above and a set of - wait for it - NXT/Mission-sourced flat-panel speakers. Denon has decided to go for the flat speakers in the belief that the living room-destroying size of normal speakers is one of the biggest hurdles to most people buying into the surround sound experience - and this specially designed speaker set doesn't add as much to the cost of the DVD-F100 system as you might think: you could get the full DVD-F100 system and the speakers for between £1,200 and £1,300.
Before wrapping up, I just can't resist mentioning Denon's imminent THX-certified AVC-A1SE amp, which basically copes with not only every sound system currently available (including DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, DTS ES Matrix 6.1 and THX Surround EX) but can have its firmware upgraded to cope with anything likely to appear in the forseeable future. It can deliver an astonishing 7 x 170W of sonic power, has every audio-boosting quality tweak known to man, and also happens to boast the most incredible array of inputs and outputs you'll ever see... Serious stuff - hence the likely £2,500 price point.
