Awww, c'mon now, you knew it was coming, it was only a matter of time. Today, New Line Home Entertainment has announced initial DVD plans for some little film called The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. (I believe this is the middle chapter in a trilogy about hobbits or elves or something.) New Line will release not one but three versions, just like last time: 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and full screen versions of the theatrical cut with minimal extras, and then a humongo-sized four-disc set with an extended cut of the film and enough extras to flatten an elephant.

The theatrical cut debuts on August 26th, and includes the full feature on disc one presented in Dolby Digital Surround EX and 2.0 surround (no DTS option is included), plus a second disc containing additional extras: the featurette "On the Set - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - Return to Middle-Earth," eight web featurettes created originally for Lordoftherings.net ("Forces of Darkness," "Designing the Sounds of Middle-Earth," "Edoras: The Rohan capital," "Creatures of Middle-Earth," "Gandalf the White," "Arms and Armor," "Battle of Hehn's Deep,=" and "Bringing Gollum to Life," the 6-minute short film by Sean Astin "The Long and the Short of It," a featurette on the making of the short, a 10-minute sneak peek at the concluding chapter in the trilogy The Return of the King, a video trailer for the upcoming four-disc set of The Two Towers, an Electronic Arts' game demo, a music video, and trailers and TV spots. Retail is $29.95.
