DVD Forum approves new HD DVDs - and ushers in another format war
Reader and regular newshound Anders Kristiansen has tipped us off to some important developments from the DVD Forum. Basically the forum has officially approved a new high-definition DVD specification developed by Toshiba and NEC. The final spec isn't likely to be approved until May-ish next year, but key facts about the new format are that it will store up to 40GB of data and critically will be backwards compatible with existing DVD discs. What's more, the Forum-approved system will be compatible with current DVD replication equipment.

Which all sounds great until you recall that no less than nine industry big hitters – including Sony, Pioneer and Philips – look set to continue to develop a DIFFERENT high-def DVD format, dubbed Blu-Ray. This format can squeeze 50GB on a disc, but won’t be compatible with current replication kit or the Forum-approved technology. So guess what folks? With both 'sides' in the HD DVD world likely to have players out in 2003, it looks like another damaging format war is just around the corner. Oh goodie…
