New solid-state CRT could take over from LCD and plasma

LCD and plasma may have a new threat to their flat-panel dominance - and it’s actually based on good old CRT technology! Researchers at Tokyo University have managed to put together a high-resolution, solid state CRT screen that crucially does not depend on the presence of a vacuum.

It works like this: ballistic electrons are fired at phosphors on a screen using an array of electrodes, similar to the normal field emissive display but without interposing a vacuum between the electrodes and the phosphor layer. How are the ballistic electrons generated? By a cascade of electrons tunnelling through multiple barriers between tiny crystals of silicon.

Those connected with the project claim that since the device is based on silicon and can make use of simple matrix-driving techniques, it could prove significantly cheaper to mass produce than flat-screen alternatives, and will be ideally suited to large area, high resolution displays.
