Video: How Does The Disc Look?
MGM has gone the extra mile by supplying Harley and Marlboro with nice, new anamorphic widescreen transfer in the film's 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio (a first for home video). Colors seem to be well balanced and the indoor shots look as good as the outdoor shots (even the ones that are incredibly sun washed). The print is in generally good condition, although a few blemishes creep in, including what looked to me to be a nasty little water spot on the image at 29 minutes 22 seconds. It's a rather large spot that obscures the upper half of Rourke for one frame, however at just one frame most people are probably more likely to see it subliminally. There is a fair amount of film grain visible that, at times, can be distracting and the image as a whole leans a bit towards a softer appearance with occasional NTSC artifacting and just a bit of shimmer degrading the picture at times. Fans of the film will probably be very excited to finally have the film in anamorphic widescreen, but it definitely looks slightly older than it actually is.
Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?
The film's original 2.0 Dolby Surround track has been included, and is really much better than expected. Directional effects are well placed in the front soundstage with attention paid to creating a believable soundtrack (even if the film rarely is). Surround use was also very aggressive with a decent body that filled the room well, especially with musical moments. If there is an element of the soundtrack I found lacking, it is in the lower extension. I don't know about you, but I've heard a Harley up close and it has much more kick than it ever does in this soundtrack. What you get instead is a loud batch of sound, but one that lacks any decent rumble. It seems odd to go to all the trouble of creating an aggressive mix, yet with limited fidelity.
In addition to the English Dolby Surround, a French Dolby Surround and Spanish mono track have also been included, along with French and Spanish subtitles and English Closed Captions.
