Hi,
I saw a Viagtec VC1280 at a friends home in February, and I liked the picture, especially playing PAL DVDs, very much - wonderful colors. We compared it to his COMMTEC UP1280, and it blew the older unit completely away: Much more detail, more features, etc.
I took it home to compare it to my Quadscan PRO and my HTPC (Radeon 7200, TheaterTek DVD), connected to a NEC XG1352LC 8" CRT.
Needless to say that it totally blew the Quad out of the water: More vibrant color, amazingly more detail (I could hardly believe the difference - it wasnґt even SDI), flicker free display at 75Hz and 100 Hz for PAL and 90 Hz and 120Hz for NTSC, more inputs, better user interface, no problems when switching between PAL and NTSC sources. I couldnґt spot a single flaw.
What amazed me even more was how it compared to the HTPC: PAL movie discs looked nearly the same(!) on the HTPC and the Vig (I used Line tripling at 75Hz on both machines) - and I wasnґt even using SDI. I never thought an analog connection could transport that much detail! And I even preferred the Vigs colors to the HTPC. PAL video transfers (like Wallace and Gromit or ZZ Top greatest Hits) looked much better on the Vig because of its superior deinterlacing.
For NTSC discs, I would like the Vig to have a 72Hz mode: There was a slight stutter in fast pans. But I still think the colors are superior to my HTPC, and the detail level looked identical to me. For video source material, the Vigs deinterlacing was - once again - much better than the PC.
A few other details of the Vig: Bulit quality is first rate, it has two outputs, so I can drive my 17" TFT and my CRT-projector the at same time, the new remote is really ok, and the number of inputs its overwhelming.
So I got rid of my Quadscan and bought, a Vig, too. Iґve got it now for two weeks, and I havenґt used the HTPC since then (which is a shame because it took me years to configure it): PQ is nearly identical, the Vig having more vibrant colors and the PC having a little smoother NTSC playback - but the ease of use of the Vig is unbeatable. I remind you, I didnґt buy it to replace the HTPC but to replace the trusty old Quadscan!
