' I finally plugged the 733A into my Mark Levinson system and have an audition on the 3 hot audio formats: SACD, DVD/A and CD. I can however test the 2-channel stereo performance of the SACD and DVD/A as my system is not equipped with multi-channel discret inputs.

' SACD: The audio signal is a direct output from DSD without converting to PCM as in the case of AX10. Sonically it is very revealing in details, analytical and has smooth rythm flow. The highs are airy with pretty good focusing and image. However, it lacks an overall sense of richness and sounds a bit mechanical (cold), particularly from midrange down to bass, it sounds a bit lean and lacks the body to give sufficient warmth. The bass authority is light-weighted and rolls off pretty fast thus causing the dynamic to suffer. My above comments however could due to the fact that I was too much acclimated to the Sony SCD-777ES (which I have recently modified by replacing the on-board RCA jacks: http://ryoko.telhope.com/~tkchan/777mod/777Mod.html). If listening to the 733A without such reference, the SACD playback delivers a pretty good impression.

' DVD/A: I borrow a single copy of DVD/A (Jose Cura: Verismo) from my friend for testing. This was therefore my 1st ever listening experience with DVD/A. 5 minutes into the music, I was so attracted to it that I ended up listening to another half-hour before I stopped. I must say the DVD/A playback was impresssive, at least twice better than the SACD. It is a pity that I don't have the same titles to compare and the recording quality of the software is also very important. But all the 'drawbacks' I listed for SACD playback vanished considerably, replacing with improved fullness and warmth. The sound stage that it casts through the 2-channel system was amazing. It gave a natural and refreshing air vis-a-vis the seemingly mechanical (or digital) sounding or SACD. My friend who is playing it in multi-channel mode commended highly that its DVD/A playback quality is well worth the price.

' CD: Another surprise to me when playing CD because I would expect this to be the weakest of the 3 given its comparatively low resolution format. However, thanks to its upsampling processing, the CD sound is matching very close to the sounding of the SACD, except there is a tiny bit of harshness in the high but I would say it may do more with the CD itself. There is no lack of details and the sound stage extends to excellent imaging. What is lacking, like SACD, is the richness and warmth but this certainly can improve with more burn-in.

' Perhaps I should mention that the 733A incorporates some very advanced audio circuit under the hood that could only be found in the expensive machines:

' 1) A digital filter that restores some of the high-frequency information lost in the CD and DVD recording and mastering process by upsampling from 44.1kHz to 176.4kHz for CD and from 48kHz to 192kHz for DVD.

' 2) A high-bit circuit extends the dynamic range by increasing the bit depth from 16-20 bit to 24 bit. This would compensate for low-level audio details.

' 3) A high-quality 24bit/192kHz DAC for processing of CD and DVD signals.

' My conclusion is that despite the light weighted construction of the 733A, it delivers some pretty heavy weight performance both in sound and vision. This test unit of 733A is far from burn-in. We all know that audio output needs very long burn-in time. So my impression should be taken as how a fresh unit may sound. With some suitable modification, e.g. changing to a good quality power cable and feeding it to a line condition, it is quite possible to further improve the audio quality.
