The Fabulous Thunderbirds: Live (DVD-Audio)

Audio Format: 5.1 channel 96/24, Dolby Digital 2.0, DTS 96/24

The Fabulous Thunderbirds: Live disc includes a new audio beastie: DTS's new 96kHz/24-bit "master-quality" encoded track, which means, if you have the latest and greatest high-end equipment, you can get the full measure of this music. Well, sadly, I don't have equipment that can decode the extra resolution that is "piggy-backed" onto the digital bitstream coming off this disc, so on my equipment it comes out at 48kHz. Nonetheless, the track sounds a bit fuller than the lowly (by comparison) DD 2.0 track since the center channel is used, but it doesn't match up to the MLP track. Still, closing up that hole some makes the guitar and pianos runs quite a bit more realistic sounding, and helps make them a bit more evident in the soundstage - even if in some places the "underpinning" sounds of the band should "get out of the way" and let the soloist have the day. "Where Were You" is good track to experience this effect because of the extended piano solo runs, as well as the sax solo. The DTS track is definitely an improvement over the DD 2.0 track, but it doesn't quite match up to the MLP track in terms of forcefulness and exactness. However, like the MLP track, it also suffers from lack of liveliness across the front soundstage and the same struggle between the overly "large" sound of the band and the more delicate passages that just beg to be heard.
