`I also examined the Fifth Element's data rates using my Sony DVD players bit rate meter. Although something of a crude measurement, the bit rate meter does substantiate Sony's claim that this Superbit DVD runs at nearly double the rate of a typical disc. The previous Fifth Element DVD squeezed all 126 minutes onto a single layer and the bit rate only occasionally jumps over 5 mbps. It hovers mostly in the 3.5mbps range. On the Superbit I never saw the data rate dip below 5 mbps, and it was often between 7-8 mbps. As a result, there are no compression artifacts whatsoever, and this presentation unbelievably clean. It looks like film, not digital video.
