`Philips used this year's IFA electronics show in Berlin to take the wraps off Pixel Plus, a new proprietary technology which aims to radically increase the sharpness, brightness and stability of a TV picture by increasing its resolution. ` `Similar in principal to Sony's DRC-MF technology, Pixel Plus provides 833 lines x 2048 pixels of resolution, compared to 625 x 1024 for ordinary PAL signals and 525 lines for NTSC signals. ` `The extra resolution is achieved by a digital algorithm which interpolates into the image additional pixels based on the luminance of the actual pixels contained in the incoming signal.One particular benefit of this on large screens is the removal of the black, 'dead' lines visible during NTSC viewing. ` `The first TV sets carrying the new system will appear in the UK in January 2002. ` ` |
