SOUND
Ooooops! That bobbling, bouncing noise you’re hearing is the sound of Disney and THX
dropping the ball and accidentally drop-kicking it into the dirty socks bin on the sideline. Man!
How did this one get by? You’d think it would be easier to miss a whale in a school of sardines.

By now you’ve probably read somewhere, or heard this DVD for yourself, and are aware that
the DD mix has the front left and surround left channels mixed together and emanating from both
speakers. This makes for a very odd, lopsided listening experience. Not only are sound effects
coming from over the shoulders that should be isolated in the forward main, but Collins’ music
is heavier in the surround as well. Is this a total disaster? Will the kiddies notice this problem?
Probably not, and even if they did, they wouldn’t care much. But you will at least be distracted
off and on during the feature. Personally, I was very distracted. Not only from the shifted
sounds, but because I knew the mix was botched and was waiting for problems in each scene --
anticipating them.

Is it possible that some discs are fine? Here’s a test published on the ‘Hampton Roads Fun!’
web site, posted in Bill Kelley’s DVD Guide column. Go to chapter 15 on your DVD. At 31:12
into the feature you’ll hear a gunshot. If it’s heard in your left surround speaker you’ve got a bum
disc. What’s a DVD fan to do? Well, if you’ve not bought the disc yet, you may want to consider
holding off until Disney releases their special edition in a couple of months. Not only should the
DD track be fixed, but the disc promises to be loaded with features -- as was Disney’s spec ed
of A BUG’S LIFE. If you have bought TARZAN already, you can return it with your receipt, or
call Disney’s Customer Service Hotline (1-800-723-4763) for a replacement.

Perhaps you’ve also read a bit about Disney’s decision to make their Dolby Digital mix for
TARZAN 5.0, rather than 5.1 The studio has argued that the 5.0 track best represents the sound
heard in theaters since theaters don’t have separate .1FX channels. This is true. However, DD
theaters DO have full range signals sent to full range speakers in all positions. Since the
majority of consumers do not have full range speakers in all positions, a .1 FX channel is
required if one is to hear the lower frequencies on a film’s track. This is why Dolby included
the .1FX channel in their Dolby Digital in the first place.

Disney’s being disingenuous by saying this track or any other has been produced at 5.0 rather
than 5.1 because it best represents the theatrical experience. It certainly does not, since it leaves
off the lower tones -- unless you’re one of the few, the very few, to have full range speakers in
all positions -- including at center. Disney’s decision to go 5.0 here reflects laziness and a lack
of commitment to producing the best discs they can, and any attempt to justify their actions with
this or any other lame excuse is insulting to home theater fans who’ve invested hard earned
money into their sound systems and Disney’s product. Shame on them.

We’re disappointed with this mix due to the cross-channeling involving the front and rear left
speakers and the studio’s decision to go 5.0. However, for those less interested in such things
and more concerned with how the audio will sound for the little ones in the house -- there are no
problems with clarity. All dialogue is very well recorded. Voices sound full and natural --
never distorted or compressed. Phil Collins’ music sounds terrific and expansive. However, the
lyrics do work their way into the left surround channel and this sounds odd. It’s difficult to
comment on sound effects placement and panning effects for obvious reasons. We’ll reserve
judgment until the TARZAN spec ed hits the shelves in April. We’re optimistic, and expect to
see the channel problem solved, however we hold out very little hope for a .1FX signal.
