US speaker outfit Ambiance Acoustics has just launched one of the most wonderfully barmy five-channel speaker packages we've ever seen. The five Hyper Cube speakers that make up the HY-V (that's high five, in case you hadn't figured it out) system each have no less than 16 4.5in full-range drivers. Which equates, reckons Ambiance, to being 'surrounded' by a remarkable 80 'normal' speakers. The idea behind the system is to use room reflection (the Cubes use four drivers firing up and four firing to each side) to create a sense of spaciousness and the sort of impact usually only generated by large speakers, even though the Cube enclosures themselves are only 13.6in cubed in size.
The full HY-V Home Theater system, comprising five Hyper Cubes and three 2-channel outboard processors (leaving you a spare for six-channel sound), is to be launched in the US for $5,817, in a variety of different finishes. For further details visit the Ambiance Acoustics website.
