Just when you thought the world of home cinema audio couldn't get any more confusing, along comes DTS with a brand new 5.1-channel system.
The new format, which DTS has just announed at the Audio Engineering Society conference in Amsterdam, delivers 96kHz, 24-bit sound to all 5.1 channels. Previously 96kHz/24-bit sound was only available from DVD-video discs in two channels.
DTS was also keen to point out in its press release that the new system can also be used on DVD-Audio discs, with the DTS 96/24 track being placed in the DVD-A discs' 'video zone' so that people without DVD-A players can still enjoy multi-channel 96/24 quality from such discs using their DVD-Video players.
The new system is fully backward compatible with all existing DTS decoders, which will downmix it to 48kHz/24-bit sound, but advanced 96/24 DTS decoders should start to appear from a number of big-name brands later this year.
