The Director's Cut features more than 150 shots removed from the theatrical version prior to release in order to get a R rating and an alternative ending.

Here are all the additional scenes, roughly in chronological order:

<LI>the death of Mallory's father is slightly extended with more graphic footage;</LI>

<LI>when Mickey and Mallory run out of gas in the desert they start to argue;</LI>
<LI>Mallory points a gun at Mickey and forces him to remove his trousers. He's chased by a ram escaped from the herd of the indian shaman. Mickey and Mallory ask him for help and follow him home;</LI>

<LI>after hitting the guard (Vince Pruitt Taylor) in the face with the butt of a shotgun, Mickey convinces him to bring him to Mallory's cell by breaking his fingers;</LI>

<LI>the warden's (Tommy Lee Jones) death scene at the hand of the prisoners is more explicit. The prisoners are seen waving his dismembered body parts and his head on a spear;</LI>

Although the R-rated version was given an uncut 18 certificate on both cinema and video releases in the UK, the video release was held back indefinitely by Warners in the wake of the Dunblane massacre. It has yet to be released (as of Nov 98), despite this version having been shown uncut on network TV (Channel 5) in Britain.

In the HBO version the diner scene where the bullet flys toward the cooks head then pauses briefly is removed, along with other small removals.
