We've just received Disney's official response concerning the problems many of our readers are experiencing with the R2 Dinosaur DVD release. This is impressively detailed as such responses go, but we're not sure you'll like what it says. A follow-up call confirmed what the letter implied: that there will be no Gladiator-style reissue of the disc for people whose players won't handle the original. Anyway, here's the response in full:

"We are concerned to hear that a number of consumers are experiencing playability issues with the recently released Dinosaur on Disney DVD. Extensive testing on the disc following its completion has revealed that a certain players have some technical problems with the Dinosaur discs.

This problem has arisen as certain DVD players do not have sufficient memory capacity to play all of the information stored on the discs. Complex features - such as navigating the feature in ‘behind the scenes’ mode – represent fantastic advances in DVD technology (whilst still being within the world-wide DVD Forum specifications). However, some hardware does not have the ability to interpret all of this information.

In light of this, some hardware manufacturers are in fact offering chip upgrades on their DVD players and we are recommending that consumers therefore refer to their hardware manufacturers in the first instance. If consumers cannot resolve the hardware related problem in conjunction with the manufacturer or obtain a refund on the software from the retailer at which it was purchased, Disney consumer enquiries will of course offer a full refund.

We are of course concerned that some customers are experiencing problems and we are working hard with the UK DVD Committee as well as hardware manufacturers to ensure that hardware specifications match those of the advancing software capabilities and limit such issues in future. We are, however, committed to bring the most exciting DVDs we can to consumers of all ages."

Folk wanting to contact Disney for a refund should call Carole Brown on 020 8222 2766.

For the record, here's a list of the players we know of that struggle with the Dinosaur disc: Toshiba SD-100E; Toshiba SD9000E; Panasonic A100; Nintaus 9901; Alba 103; Samsung DVD-807; Limit JDV300A; Proline 2000; Grundig 520 Home Cinema system; some makes of Hitachi DVD player; and Denon DVD1500.

Thanks to all the dozens of people who wrote to us concerning this problem - and if you've got a player that's not mentioned on this list that won't play Dinosaur R2, please let us know so we can prewarn other people who've got the same player not to bother buying the disc.
