Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?

Criterion and Buena Vista went all out for this definitive edition of The Rock, and much to everyone's delight, this goes for the sound as well as the picture. Buena Vista has wisely chose to include Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround mixes, as well as a Dolby Digital 2.0 surround track. (Why is the 2.0 surround track significant? Because then no compromises need to be made to the 5.1 masters for downmixing to 2.0.)

When comparing the various soundtracks, I found some interesting similarities and differences. When comparing the Dolby 2.0 mix on the DVD to the uncompressed PCM stereo surround tracks of the laserdisc, I was a bit stunned. Usually when doing these comparisons, uncompressed PCM blows away the Dolby surround on a DVD, but in this case they were surprisingly similar. But as with most pro-logic mixes in the days of full 5.1, both of these seem to lack the aggressiveness of their multichannel cousins. Now most fans eagerly awaiting this release are going to be more concerned with how the Dolby and DTS 5.1 mixes stack up, and I started by comparing the laserdisc and DVD's Dolby 5.1 tracks. The DVD seemed to have more punch, and better low-end extension than the laserdisc. Generally, I've found the opposite to be true in most cases. Once again this could be attributed to the new master, which in truth shouldn't be any different. Whenever Hans Zimmer's soundtrack comes to life, there's a consistent thump in the low frequencies, more so than on the laserdisc. A definite improvement.

Now we get to the big question, "How does the DD compare to the DTS?" Let me preface this to mention no tweaking was done in-between comparing the two soundtracks, I kept the volume level consistent when making my audio comparisons. One of the advantages of this Criterion disc compared to most dual Dolby and DTS releases is that you can change audio on the fly, at least on my set up. When flipping between the Dolby and DTS soundtracks, I found the Dolby Digital mix to be more aggressive, not only in the surrounds, but during sequences with a lot of bass. While the DTS audio mix seemed to have more controlled low frequencies, it just didn't have the punch of the Dolby 5.1 mix. The DTS mix seemed to collapse a little more to the front with certain surround effects, especially music, giving the nod to the Dolby track in terms of imaging as well. When I view a Dolby versus DTS disc I'll check the two audio tracks and usually go for the DTS but not this time.
