`TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
`An opening reading for jitter reveals an impressive figure of 3 nanoseconds peak-to-peak. No worries over image stability there, then.
`Even better, though, was the -79.2dB result of an inherent signal-to-noise ratio test. This is the highest measurement we've found to date, and suggests some absolutely top-notch screening of the player's mechanics (happily it's a huge improvement over the SD-3107).
`As for colour performance, the good news continues with impressively high and close-together figures of -70.3dB and -68.2dB for Chroma AM and PM readings respectively. These, again, are among the best two or three results we've ever found. And still the top stuff continues. A frequency response sweep confirmed my subjective impression of the player's prowess with detail. At 5.8MHz, we recorded -4.53dB and -4.27dB for S-video and composite feeds respectively. Once again these are the best results we've seen - edging out the previous winner, the 3107!
`The only thing that takes the edge off these otherwise awesome test figures is a distinctly poor reading of -46.1dB for chroma crosstalk. This suggests that if you use the S-video connection and your TV hasn't got a good digital comb filter much of the Tosh's pictorial talent might get spoilt by some colour flaring interference over fine details. So either make sure you've got a top TV, or else use the RGB hookup if possible.
`Finally we get to audio, for which we found a reading of 469.9 picoseconds of digital deviation. The very best audiophile players manage between 150 and 300 picoseconds, but the Tosh's result is still very good indeed when you consider that we have tested some players that turn in figures in excess of 5,000 picoseconds.

`TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
`A great set of results for the double-barrelled SD-3109
`VIDEO
`Jitter: 3ns
`Inherent signal to noise ratio: -79.3 dB
`Chroma crosstalk: -44.3dB
`Chroma AM/PM: -69.8dB/-69.0dB
`
`Frequency response at 5.8MHz: -3.90dB (S-video)/ -4.08dB (composite video)
`AUDIO
`Digital deviation: 216.4ps
`The top performance of the SD-3109 is marred only by a below average reading of -44.3dB for chroma crosstalk, which means that it may suffer from picture interference when dealing with fine detail information.
`But this slight problem may well be countered by the excellent figures for frequency response, especially for S-video which is among the best we've seen this year. These results mean that the SD-3109 can retrieve fine detail exceptionally well.
`Other areas in which it excels are the chroma AM/PM results, with figures of -69.8 dB and -69.0 dB respectively being excellent. In layman's terms, it means the player should give excellent colour performance. The results for jitter of 3ns and -79.3 dB for signal-to-noise ratio complete a marvellous all-round performance from the SD-3109.

`Not surprisingly, the SD-9000 turns out to be a very good performer in the HCC labs. The video jitter measurement of image stability is first rate, as are the terrific chroma (colour) readings, which indicate colour richness and stability. And then there are those frequency response readings, which once again proves that Toshiba is in a class of its own when it comes to retrieving detail from DVD. The audio, meanwhile, while falling slightly short of three or four other decks currently available (most of them Sonys!), is still classable as very good, leaving only chroma crosstalk and inherent signal to noise ratio in the merely average territory. While it's surprising to find these two measurements not excelling on a player as well put together as this, it has to be said that neither are persuasive enough to spoil the overall viewing experience.
`It's worth pointing out, though, that the much cheaper Toshiba 2109 actually pretty much matched or bettered the 9000 in most of the lab tests, only really falling short on chroma crosstalk and audio Digital Deviation. Which is interesting...

`IMAGE ANALYSIS
`The lab tests mix the good with the bad. A couple of poor (for DVD) results - chroma crosstalk at just -40dB and chroma AM/PM averaging just -59dB with a big discrepancy between the AM and PM measurements - mar some generally impressive numbers. Detail retrieval is revealed as very good for both composite and S-video signals with figures of -8.26dB and -8.17dB respectively at 5.8MHz; a signal-to-noise ratio of -71.4dB indicates a pleasingly synch-engineered product; and there's a good jitter reading of 5 nanoseconds

`Our point about image detail being greatly influenced by the sharpness and detail settings were clearly measured in the lab. The above (excellent) resolution figures were achieved with 60 per cent shown on the sharpness display and 10 per cent on detail. Yet minimising both settings gave a measurement of -30.75dB (truly awful!) reading at 5.8MHz and -12.58 dB (way below average) at 4.0MHz. Pushing both to maximum gave a response that was -0.75dB (excellent) at 5.8MHz yet non-linear at lower frequencies, indicating the presence of ringing. Otherwise, this player demonstrated a very good signal-to-noise ratio - even with the DNR switched off - and average chroma (colour) crosstalk from the S-video terminal. The video jitter at 8ns is a tad high although no image instability was perceived. The chroma AM figure is excellent at -68.4dB, but the PM figure is below average at -49.1dB.
`In terms of audio, we see a good Digital Deviation reading indicating a stable mechanism and well-designed audio stage.
`We also checked for lip-sync problems and ran Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels - a disc known to be particularly troublesome. We can report zero sync errors, the hand clap at the beginning of the disc and subsequent dialogue sounding perfectly in time with vision. Excellent.

`Undoubtedly the star here is the frequency response measurement for detail presentation, which propels the 737 to a level only matched by Toshiba. All the other marks show a general high quality except for Chroma crosstalk, but so long as you have a decent TV this won't be a problem

`IMAGE ANALYSIS
`Objectively, this budget-priced DVD player delivers similar performance to many higher-priced models. Sync jitter is very good at 3 nanoseconds. The S/N ratio is excellent at -74.9dB, one of the best figures ever measured in our lab. In terms of colour fidelity, the DVD-807 is fair at -57.3dB for chroma AM and -74.9dB for chroma PM. We were unable to measure chroma crosstalk (and high-band frequency response) for lack of an S-video output. However, detail retrieval from the composite output is stunning. We measured -4.05dB at 4.0MHz and -8.08dB at 5.8MHz, figures that challenge many top-flight competitors.
